Today we’d like to introduce you to Mylesha Davis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was always the artsy kid; drawing, coloring, painting. During the MySpace era I would get excited for every tweak of an HTML code that I figured out myself. When it came time for college applications I was in a bit of a rut—I wanted to keep that creative spark alive but wasn’t sure how to blend it with my studies. Then, I stumbled upon a college that seemed to get it, placing a heavy emphasis on creative fields.
During a visit to the campus to FIDM in San Francisco, they had me take a career test, which surprisingly pointed me towards Graphic Design. Then it clicked—I knew that’s what I wanted to major in and learn more about. So off I went to Cal State San Bernardino, where I majored in Graphic Design & Marketing. And later, I decided to level up with a Master’s in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing at the University of Redlands.
After graduation, I landed a gig as a Promotions Coordinator at a KOLA 99.9 radio station, giving me my first insights into the world of professional event management. Then, I moved on to the Building Industry Association of Southern California, where I wore so many hats I lost count—event planning, marketing, recruiting new members, you name it.
But I couldn’t resist the call of the big city, so I packed my bags and headed to New York, where I worked as an Event Producer for Argyle Executive Forum working with big name companies and planning full-day conferences all across the country.
For the past 4 years, I’ve been connecting the community with great local businesses as the Inland Empire Community Director for Yelp. It’s a mix of everything I’m passionate about—marketing, events, design, and connecting with my community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the greatest challenges I’ve encountered in my career is my desire to pursue multiple endeavors all at once. It’s been a journey of learning that while I may have the capability to take on numerous tasks, I can’t effectively manage them all at the same time. Understanding my limits in terms of time and resources has been crucial. I’ve had to recognize when I lack the bandwidth to take on additional projects and accept that it’s perfectly acceptable to no to certain opportunities or postpone them for a later time. It’s been a lesson in prioritization and understanding that saying “no” to some projects or putting them off until I capacity is not a sign of weakness but rather a strategic decision to ensure that I can give my best to each project.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
So, as a Yelp Community Director, my job is all about being the link between local businesses and the Yelp Community. Basically, I’m here to make sure everyone’s vibing and connected. My main focus is creating awesome events that bring folks together and bring more awareness to those hyper-local businesses that may not have the budget or reach of a brand like Yelp. Additionally, I aim to amp up their presence on Yelp, crafting engaging social media posts that drive audiences straight to the platform.
One of the best things about my job is connecting with business owners and diving into their stories—really understanding their “why” behind what they do. It’s incredible how every story is so different, and I find it inspiring to witness these entrepreneurs thriving in their passion. Being able to contribute to their success and help elevate their business is what fills my cup each day.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I love to read, mostly fictional books, but I like dabble in the occasional self-help book or inspirational biography. I loved reading ‘You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life’ by Jen Sincero. I am currently reading ‘Single: On Purpose’ by John Kim. It’s been really interesting so far because he writes as if he’s speaking to you, so it’s an easy read. As for podcasts, I recently have listened to a few from Group Chat, but some of my faves are Call Her Daddy, On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Nerd Wallet’s Smart Money Podcast, and my friends’ podcast 20 Dollar Ticket, where they talk all things movies and how much they’d pay to see them.
